Committed youth

On February 11, on the campus of the University Autonomy of Barcelona (Nonyielding Vallès, Catalunya), will take place the celebration of a day of awareness, visibility, and prevention of the disorders of eating behavior (TCA). The most unique of this initiative is that it has been designed by and for young students. That is, are two groups of students (the health of the Foundation program autonomous solidarity and collective Acacia UAB) who have devised and organized the activity, for which you have requested the support of the Association against Anorexia and Bulimia (AHAB) in Catalonia, promoter of the famous Bell #Rester.

Read the program of activities, at the beginning which contained the following objectives, as a direct injection of dopamine via mezzo cortex limbic:

Make visible the problem of acts and altered food behaviors.
Demystify these issues, helping to remove false beliefs (for example, that bread is fattening or that acts do not occur in pediatric age group).

Make primary in a population of risk prevention as it is the young university population.
To highlight the predominant importance of socio-cultural factors such as the aesthetic model of tax, in the pathogenesis of the TCA (without denying, obviously, the underlying biological factors, enabling without going any further animal models of these very useful diseases in basic research).

Articulate a reasoned and incisive critique of the tax aesthetic model, as well as a firm response against this model and its consequences.

Between proposals for activities, a photo session with the slogan "Take a photo love you", a painted massive real silhouettes on the ground, the construction of a Gauss Bell with the real anthropometric measures of students (based, as I read in an article by a servant: see "The Mango campaign", at this same site), games to learn and demystify the TCA, and a table full of food to socialize and celebrate the pleasure of the Food Act.

The fact that a group of young students, most without training in psychology or medicine, have clear ideas and be so decomposable as to expose them and organize (with very few resources, everything is said incidentally) a brave, original, and committed to their University intervention shows that there is a latent social conscience on these issues would lead many people to support If they had the opportunity to do so, similar initiatives. For this reason, I want to express my admiration and gratitude to this brave youth that, contradicting topics and counteracting that, to put it in some way, is less dynamic and productive, committed by way of peer to peer in the promotion of healthy eating habits. Against standardization of the aesthetic model imposed by economic powers and legitimacy on a daily basis by the media, perhaps the most effective weapons we have are the visibility, demystification, prevention and the preparation of a coherent critical discourse that can scroll background. The boycott against enterprises and media pathogens is, in my opinion, desirable and necessary: has only a sense relative to promote it without doing the same with literacy in media and other efforts to immunize people against messages that, whether we like or not, will flood them day after day in our society.

And what is media literacy? To put it simply, it is therefore a form of literacy that is to do something as simple as putting, especially young people, before one announcement either and explain to them that what they see is a lie; or is manipulated; or sexist; or it is degrading to women or to men in their gender condition; or it is degrading to the human being as worthy of dignity and respect.

Alternatively, very often, is this all at the same time. Teach them why it is so, what aim when they try we sell; and what would happen if everyone knew nothing but display an advertisement or news, if anyone did case, if some people take it to joke, others are indignant identifying advertisers and informants as the bunch of barbarians who are often... If these were the majority answers to tax messages about aesthetics, would what sense have these messages? Think about it: a media literate society would, by definition, useless and sterile attempts to impose any aesthetic model, and even mores an aesthetic model with the characteristics that we are trying to impose: impossible to achieve, pathological and, to top it off little, aesthetically disturbing, away from the healthy image and I think beautiful bodies of women and men.
